The only reason that I wanted to watch
The Leftovers in the first place is because of its Sci-Fi nature. I am a big sucker for Sci-Fi and when something with a cool synopsis catches my attention, I never let it go and watch it. But once I started watching this show, I realised that it is not what I though it was. I may have wanted to watch it for the Sci-Fi but I did not stay for just the Sci-Fi. The deeper I went the more I realised that this show is not even about the Sci-Fi and that the show just uses its Sci-Fi elements to tell a much more deeper and darker story about humans. The way this show dives deep into the depths of human psychology and human behavior is beyond imagination. It shows how humans deal with grief, specially a shocking grief about shocking tragic events that just happen before the mind can even grasp what happened, the struggle of moving on, problems in life, broken relationships, the faith in god, the relationship between parent and children and most importantly search for some from of closure. So many events happen in the show that appear paranormal or supernatural in a way with characters like Holy Wayne who seemingly has the ability to just hug a person and make them forget their grief and pain. But in the true context, we are never really shown that he actually even has such powers. In fact it just left to us the viewers to make whatever we can. It is entirely possible that people just believe him and hence when they hug him, they feel much better and happier just because of the belief. It shows the power of human embrace and how important it is to let go of any emotional baggage. In real life, when someone hugs someone they believe and trust, it brings in a feeling of comfort, a powerful bond. The Leftovers really is a deep and rich drama that has minimal Sci-Fi and Supernatural elements looming in the background that is not even supposed to be the main issue of the show. It uses the shocking Sci-Fi element of erasing 1% of the total world population to really dive deep into how humans react to a shocking and tragic loss that they cannot even really explain and how the loss gets deeply entangled into the memories and it effects future relation because no matter how hard one tries, they cannot really move away from that event since they never really got any form of closure. It has some of the best acting work that I have ever seen with super powerful and emotional performances. It is a dark and depressing show with very few light and happy moments but that is what makes these light and happy moments so powerful that gives you chills right down at your spine. As for if the show ever explains the disappearance of 1% population? well yes but actually no(yup that sums it up). This show is not something that really answers your every question but it is a unique show and one of its kind. It kind of ruined other shows for me. The greatest thing about this show is that it ends without stretching.
