Reliance Jio did an Oopsie!
Reliance Jio came in yesterday and announced that basically the promise they made about the free unlimited calling a few years back is pretty much gone now because of IUC(Interconnect User Charges) which is basically the the amount that one operator pays to another operator for sending a call.So if I use suppose Jio and a make a call to Vodafone than Jio will have to pay IUC to Vodafone at the rate of 6 Paisa per minute. This IUC rate has been fixed by none other than TRAI(Telecom Regulatory Authority Of India who have in the past back in 2011 said in the Supreme Court that they would like to remove this charge completely in January 2020 but it seems like they have kind of back pedaled on this as now, they want more time to think about it it(Airtel and Vodafone are blackmailing TRAI!).Now, Jio's entire business model since the beginning was based on the fact that someday in the future, TRAI would remove the IUC and that is why they did the whole 'Unlimited Calling' thing in the first place and that is why they were willing to pay the IUC from their own pockets because they took TRAI's word as a confirmation that the removal of IUC would indeed happen in the future.Lets not forget that other Major Network competitors in the Telecom Industry have looted customers of years and hence the IUC pretty much does not affect them since they have way too much looted money but Jio started everything as free test and they have probably spent way too much money for zero return during the early days at the same time dealing with the IUC which they claim that they have paid ₹13000 crore to other operators in the last three years and even today they are paying ₹200 crore monthly to other operators.Jio has also explained why they have to pay so much IUC and they claim the reason is that Jio has to face way too many outgoing calls compared to incoming calls and the main reason they state for it is that there are still many people who use 2G networks and the operators charge too much money for the Talk-time Top Up recharges,in some cases charging as high as ₹1.5 per minute which makes the user of the 2G network to give a missed call to Jio and hence,Jio's incoming call gets automatically converted into outgoing call and hence they are paying extra 6 paisa per minute to the operator that is already earning ₹1.5 per minute.Jio claimed that they receive 25 to 30 crore missed calls daily because they have truly unlimited voice compared to other other operators minutes limit.
But Jio has had enough and they do not want to keep giving subsidies forever and this where they did an oopsie. Now they will charge the IUC from us the customers and now people will have to recharge a talk-time Top-Up starting from ₹10 to make calls to other operators.Jio is not a foolish company and it knows that people will be really mad about this so they were like 'Lets give them free data along with the talk-time and they will not care!' Well........we all now how that ended up
Airtel-So will we receive our IUC Jio-Yes Airtel-What did it cost? Jio-Everything..... |
